Section-10: Principles of Sandhi

Most Indian languages have rules to be applied when two words are combined to form a single word. These rules have been derived from the rules which apply to Sanskrit. Essentially, when the new word is formed, the vowel in the last akshara of the first word and the starting vowel in the second word will be combined into a resulting vowel which will be inserted to bridge the two words. This was explained in some detail while  discussing the grammar for this lesson (Part-1).

The Sandhi rules specify what must be done even in the case of consonants. The concept of Sandhi is involved with many different types of sandhi and many different exceptions to the rules! The details are a bit lengthy to be covered in a short section such as this and so we have decided to include a separate lesson on sandhi.
