On Line Sanskrit Dictionary

This is the web interface to the well known Monier Williams Sanskrit Dictionary. The familiar transliterated input method based on the Harvard Kyoto scheme is used for specifying the query string.

This page was first setup in 2003 when interactive Devanagari input on a web interface was pretty much out of question. The Acharya site did incorporate an appropriate interface using a Java Applet. Regrettably Java Applets have not found favour in web interfaces and today (2020) a different approach is taken. The query string is typed in using Roman letters which map to the aksharas of Sanskrit. A separate window will dynamically show the Devanagari rendering of the string for the user to confirm that the right string is entered.

Results are returned in the form of text built through dynamically created  images to allow virtually any graphics enabled browser to display Devanagari text. The presentation given here is based on the files provided by the Cologne based Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies. The flexibility offered by the IITM software in taking text in transliterated form and processing the same to present an effective display on a web page is very clearly brought out in this dictionary presentation.

 Note on Masking

The search for a word attempted here is on a syllable level. The representation of text in the IITM scheme allows a syllable to be matched exactly or with other syllables which match except for the vowel or cases where only the first consonant in the syllable gets matched. This approach allows searches to be made when the exact form of the syllable is not known.

River Ganga as presented on an engraving, made around 1850. The scene is at Haridwar. It is possible that Western scholars visiting India to learn about her scriptures, would have seen Ganga like this. One does not know for sure that Sir. Monier Williams himself had seen the holy river, much less at Haridwar!
